This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials.

Carpenters use a variety of skills and techniques to construct residential and commercial buildings. A career in carpentry offers the opportunity to work hands-on outdoors and can also provide a pathway to working independently as a subcontractor.

If required, theory materials can also be provided in a hard‑copy folder and text book for students who prefer paper‑based learning or have limited device access.
Students have the option to come into the MIT training facility if required to complete their theory work.

Costs
The Queensland Government contributes to the cost of training and assessment for eligible Queensland apprentices and trainees.
Through the User Choice program, you may be eligible for a contribution. Apprentices and trainees are usually required to pay a co-contribution fee for the cost of their training and assessment. In some cases, partial or full fee exemptions might apply.

A school-based carpentry apprenticeship allows Queensland secondary school students to start their carpentry career while completing high school. Students combine paid, hands-on work with an employer, formal training and their school studies while working towards a Certificate III in Carpentry.

Delivery & Assessment
A school-based carpentry apprentice typically works a minimum average of 7.5 hours of paid employment per week, with at least 375 hours (50 days) of paid work each year. Some work or training must occur during school hours, and the arrangement requires support from the student's school.

School-Based Apprenticeships - Career Start
To be eligible for the Apprenticeships Career Start funding, you must:

Be enrolled in Year 10, 11, or 12 in a Queensland School, unless undertaking an electrotechnology school-based apprenticeship, in which case the student must be in Year 11 or 12.

Not be currently enrolled in any other qualifications, apprenticeships or traineeships funded by the Department.

Not have exhausted their funding entitlement: Students will be funded for a maximum of one (1) School-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Note: A student may complete a VETiS-funded qualification prior to commencing a SAT

Have entered into a training contract (training contract) for a Qualification that is funded by the Department and be registered on the Department's training database.

Delivery & Assessment
Recognising your existing carpentry experience.
Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway for the Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) is designed for experienced workers who already have the skills, knowledge and on‑site capability to meet the requirements of the qualification. Instead of completing traditional training, you demonstrate your competency through evidence, workplace experience and practical verification. You must have at least 4 years of on-site industry experience to qualify for RPL delivery.
How RPL Delivery Works
Your assessor will evaluate your competency against all 34 units of the CPC30220 qualification (27 core + 7 electives). Assessment may include:

You’ll provide proof of your carpentry experience, such as:
- Photos and videos of completed work
- Workplace documents (plans, JSA/SWMS, invoices, job cards, material lists)
- References or third‑party reports from supervisors
- Records of previous training or licences
- WHS evidence (working at heights, construction safety, etc.)
➜Skills Verification
If required, your assessor may conduct:
- A practical observation (on‑site or via video)
- A technical interview
- Additional questions to confirm knowledge of WHS, construction processes and carpentry techniques
➜Gap Training (If Needed)
If any units cannot be fully met through RPL, you may complete short gap‑training tasks or practical demonstrations to finalise competency.

Costs
$2000 is our fee for a full RPL delivery.
Because RPL is based on your individual experience, the final cost may vary. Our RPL Training Manager will review your work history, evidence, and the units you can demonstrate competency in. If you are eligible to receive RPL for all required units, the full fee applies. If gaps are identified, your price may be adjusted to reflect the combination of RPL and any gap‑training required to ensure you only pay for the units you need.
